Pre-Transfer Interview by Timo Werner Discussing His Upcoming Move to the United States
Spurned by Spurs, Werner Seeks Fresh Start in the Big Apple
In pursuit of a new challenge, former German national player Timo Werner is reportedly primed to trade Europe for North America, potentially signing with MLS club New York Red Bulls. As noted in Leipzig Volkszeitung, this move could be on the horizon for the 29-year-old forward, who's currently under contract with Bundesliga club RB Leipzig until 2026.
Following a lackluster stint with Tottenham Hotspur on a year-and-a-half loan, the London club opted against a permanent commitment for Werner, who managed only 41 appearances and a meager three goals.
Doubts Surrounding the Superstar
A potential reunion with his former Leipzig teammate, Emil Forsberg, awaits Werner in New York. Current coach Sandro Schwarz leads the MLS team, and they're optimistic about securing the disillusioned striker's signature.
Once a promising powerhouse in 2020, when he transferred from Leipzig to Chelsea for €53 million, Werner's career has seemingly taken a downward turn in recent years. He returned to Leipzig for €20 million in 2022 but, after being loaned back to the island in January 2024, it appears his tenure with Leipzig may now be drawing to a close.
Rising in the East
With the summer transfer window opening July 24, New York Red Bulls may have their opportunity to secure the acquisition of the one-time DFB team member, who wore the German jersey 57 times. Werner would join the club's already formidable attack, bolstered by his former Leipzig colleague Forsberg and Cameroonian forward Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting.
Currently sitting seventh in the Eastern Conference with 28 points after 19 matches, the Red Bulls are looking to strengthen their squad for a new push towards the MLS Cup. By welcoming Werner on board, they may well have found the piece to help them achieve their goal.
While significant progress has been made in negotiations, it should be noted that the transfer has yet to be officially finalized. Keep an eye out for more news as the summer transfer window approaches.
