In the scorching heat, the tracks neared a whopping 50 ̊C, causing a sluggish start to Free Practice 3 for the 2025 Spanish Grand Prix. Only Franco Colapinto on the Alpine squad and Gabriel Bortoleto from Kick Sauber made an appearance early on.
The tempo picked up with Yuki Tsunoda of Red Bull taking the lead with a lap of 1:14.851s on Medium tires. However, his position was soon threatened by Lando Norris, who shot three-tenths of a second clear. Carlos Sainz of Williams took over the top spot with a Soft tire lap of 1:14.124 – but his glory didn't last long.
Charles Leclerc of Ferrari lowered the benchmark to 1:13.941s on C3 Softs, with Lewis Hamilton, also on Mediums, following closely behind, 0.121s behind his Ferrari rival.
As the session reached its halfway point, Mercedes's George Russell stormed to the front with a blistering Soft tire lap of 1:13.396. Norris took second place with an improved lap on Mediums, but it was short-lived. Max Verstappen stole the show with a lightning-fast lap of 1:13.375 on Softs, just 0.021s quicker than Russell.
Lando Norris attempted a qualifying simulation, but disaster struck with a snap of oversteer in Turn. He made another attempt, but the lackluster tires left him a considerable distance behind teammate Oscar Piastri, who claimed the top spot effortlessly with a clean lap of 1:12.387s, more than half a second ahead of Norris.
Leclerc posted a best time of 1:13.130, securing fourth place ahead of Russell and a late improvement from Verstappen to round off the top five. Isack Hadjar took sixth for Racing Bulls, ahead of Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli, while Fernando Alonso finished eighth for Aston Martin, ahead of Hamilton and the second Racing Bulls car of Liam Lawson.
