PPPP's Waqar Mehdi clinches victory in Senate by-polls
In a resounding victory, Syed Waqar Mehdi from the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) snatched the open Senate seat in Sindh during the by-election held at the Sindh Assembly yesterday. Mehdi swept the poll with a whopping 111 votes, leaving his nearest rival, MQM-P's Nighat Mirza, in the dust with just 36 votes. A couple of votes were invalid due to improper marking, as announced by the Returning Officer, Sindh's Provincial Election Commissioner, Ejaz Anwar Chauhan[1].
The polling landed between 9 am and 4 pm in the Sindh Assembly, without any pauses. In total, 149 votes were cast during the scheduled voting time. This vacancy had surfaced after the demise of PPP's Senator Taj Haider[2].
Chief Minister Sindh, Syed Murad Ali Shah, congratulated Mehdi, explaining the win as a testament to the populace's unwavering faith in the PPP. He commended the party's Chairman, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, for transforming the PPP into an insurmountable political behemoth. The chief minister further claimed that the PPP is on an unstoppable winning streak, triumphing on both public and parliamentary fronts under the leadership of Bilawal Bhutto Zardari[1][3].
In essence, the latest election results reaffirm the PPP's formidable political influence in Sindh, embodied not only by its grip on the provincial assembly but also by its persistent success in capturing crucial federal legislative posts through by-elections[1][2]. Other political parties such as PTI decided to stay away from the process, highlighting the dearth of substantial opposition in the Sindh political scene at the moment[1][3].
Syed Waqar Mehdi of the PPP was congratulated by Syed Murad Ali Shah, the Chief Minister of Sindh, on his victory in the Senate by-election held in Sindh. This was a result of Mehdi receiving 111 votes, far more than MQM-P's Nighat Mirza who gained 36 votes. The victory reaffirms the PPP's political influence in Sindh, with their control not only over the provincial assembly but also in capturing federal legislative posts through by-elections. Other political parties like the PTI chose to abstain from the process, indicating a lack of formidable opposition in Sindh politics at present. The policies and legislation enacted by the PPP in Sindh might contribute positively towards managing war-and-conflicts and general news in the province, as the party continues on its winning streak, under the leadership of Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. Haider, a former Senator of the PPP, had previously held the seat that Mehdi now occupies.
