Powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.8 strikes Russia's eastern region.
In the Russian region of Kamchatka, a powerful earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale struck the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky area, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The Emergencies Ministry in Russia reported the quake had a magnitude of 7.2.
The earthquake, which occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers, was followed by a series of aftershocks, with the largest measuring up to 5.8. The exact magnitude of the latest earthquake has not yet been reported by the U.S. Geological Survey or the Emergencies Ministry in Russia.
Governor Vladimir Solodov, responsible for coordinating the regional response, is conducting a rapid inspection of social institutions and residential buildings in Kamchatka. He has also placed all emergency services in a state of high readiness.
No new reports of damage have been made since the initial earthquake. However, a tsunami warning has been issued for the eastern shore of the Kamchatka Peninsula, jutting far out into the Bering Sea and Pacific Ocean. The advisory warns of strong currents and waves of up to 3 meters for parts of the Kamchatka coast.
The tsunami warning has been extended to parts of the Kuril island chain, north of Japan. People are advised to stay away from coastal areas.
Tsunami waves ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 meters (1.6 to 4.9 feet) are expected at various points along the coast. The U.S. National Weather Service and Pacific Tsunami Warning Center have issued a tsunami advisory for parts of Alaska as well.
This is the second significant earthquake in Kamchatka in the past week. In July, a magnitude 7.4 earthquake occurred in the region, triggering a volcanic eruption.
Governor Solodov has urged residents to remain vigilant and follow the instructions of local authorities. The situation is being closely monitored, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
