In a move that has sparked international outrage, the Israeli Cabinet has authorized a contentious plan to expand the war in Gaza by establishing "operational control" over Gaza City and evacuating about a million people to new "humanitarian zones." The aim is to achieve a complete military takeover of Gaza.

This plan, announced on August 8, 2025, involves placing Gaza City under siege and adding more points for humanitarian aid distribution. However, it is highly controversial and reportedly opposed by Israel’s own military for its likely catastrophic consequences.

The Palestinian Presidency, headed by Abu Mazen, has strongly condemned this proposal, viewing it as a continuation and intensification of occupation and violence against Gaza’s population. The Palestinian Presidency also advocates for a comprehensive political solution that will lead to the end of the occupation.

The United Nations has firmly opposed the military takeover, calling for its immediate halt. Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, declared it contrary to international law and warned it would cause massive forced displacement, deaths, and further atrocities. The UN official urged Israel to ensure full humanitarian access and the unconditional release of all hostages by Palestinian groups while also calling for the release of Palestinians detained by Israel.

Despite the international outcry, the Israeli Cabinet's plan includes five principles for ending the war: disarmament of Hamas, return of all hostages (living and deceased), demilitarization of Gaza, Israeli security control of Gaza, and establishment of an alternative civilian administration. The plan also includes the establishment of a civilian administration that is neither Hamas nor the Palestinian Authority.

The Palestinian Presidency, however, has not mentioned these principles in their statement. Instead, they adhere to their inalienable national rights, including the right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with its capital in east Jerusalem. The Palestinian people refuse to accept a policy of dictates or the imposition of facts on the ground.

The Palestinian Presidency has also called on US President Donald Trump to intervene in the situation. The Palestinian Presidency does not repeat their condemnation of the Israeli Cabinet's decisions as a "crime" and a blatant violation of international humanitarian law and legitimate international resolutions.

As the situation remains volatile, the international community continues to urge de-escalation and protection of civilians amid escalating hostilities. The future of Gaza hangs in the balance, with both sides seemingly far from reaching a peaceful resolution.

  1. Amid ongoing war-and-conflicts in Gaza, a significant portion of general news is focused on the Israeli Cabinet's contentious plan, which involves a military takeover, and the international community's opposition to it, including the United Nations, due to its potential humanitarian crisis.
  2. The Palestinian Presidency, in their efforts to find a political solution and end the occupation, advocates for their inalienable national rights, such as self-determination and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, while also urging US President Donald Trump to intervene in the current situation.
