Mystery in Moorburg: Only One Boiler House of the Power Plant Exploded, Investigation Ensuing

- Power plant's boiler room experiences an explosion at Moorburg.

Hey there! Let's dive into the curious case of Hamburg's Moorburg Power Plant. The demolition process wasn't quite as smooth as planned, with only one out of two boiler houses going boom as intended. The Hamburg Energy Works confirmed the news on Sunday, admitting they're still figuring out why the second boiler house didn't join the party.

For days and weeks prior, about 1,850 holes were drilled into the reinforced concrete supports of the boiler houses, and around 1,200 kilograms of explosives were used in total, 600 kilograms per house. Oh, and there were also 30 pools filled with 2 cubic meters of water each, intended to create a water wall to catch the flying dust during the explosion.

But here's where things get interesting. Despite the heavy-duty preparation, only one boiler house surrendered to the blast. The authorities are now digging deeper, investigating the reason why the second boiler house stood firm, despite being just as ready to go.

Don't fret though, as the demolition process isn't over yet. Next up is dismantling the coal circulation storage. Apparently, parts of the existing infrastructure and plants could have a second life, designed to serve hydrogen production purposes down the line. Stuff like water treatment plants and the workshop and storage building might still have a role to play. Additionally, the high-voltage network connection that will supply future green hydrogen plants with electricity from renewable sources will be rebuilt and relocated.

With the first round of demolition concluded (chimneys were exploded around four months ago), the site should be clearing away by the middle of this year. The goal is to have green hydrogen infrastructure set up by 2027. The Moorburg Power Plant, a staple of Hamburg's energy scene, officially closed up shop last year as the city moves towards greener energy options.

  1. The Hamburg Energy Works is investigating why only one boiler house, out of the two prepared with 600 kilograms of explosives each, collapsed during the demolition of the Moorburg Power Plant.
  2. Despite the second boiler house supposedly being just as ready for explosion as the first, it surprisingly withstood the blast, generating interest in the ongoing investigation at Moorburg.
  3. As the investigation into the unexploded boiler house continues, authorities are also planning the dismantling of the coal circulation storage and preparing for the reuse of various parts of the plant for hydrogen production purposes.
