Potsdam considers Berlin State Secretary Fischer as a potential obstetrician candidate.
In the upcoming election for Potsdam's Mayor, Severin Fischer of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) has emerged as the main contender. Fischer, who currently serves as State Secretary for Economics in Berlin, was elected as the SPD's mayoral candidate following a district party conference where he received 89.3% of the votes.
Fischer, born in Franconia, has previous experience working in Potsdam, having served as a close aide to Franziska Giffey. He also worked at the Federal Ministry of Family Affairs from 2018 to 2021, under Giffey's leadership.
The SPD has held the mayor's post in Potsdam since 1990, but the party is seeking an untainted outsider for the position following the recall of Mayor Mike Schubert due to accusations of mismanagement, stagnation, and a scandal involving free entrance tickets for sporting events.
Fischer believes that coming from outside of Potsdam, untainted by local politics, could be an advantage in the election. He has cited housing and social cohesion as key issues in his campaign.
Other candidates vying for the top seat at the town hall include Noosha Aubel, Willo Goepel, Jorn Karlipp, and Bernd Blase, all of whom are running as independents. Aubel, a former Potsdam deputy mayor and current city councilor and department head in Flensburg, has also announced her candidacy.
The Potsdam CDU has proposed Willo Goepel as their candidate, while Bernd Blase is reportedly planning to run as an independent candidate. The AfD has nominated Chaled-Uwe Said as their candidate for Potsdam Mayor.
The election for Potsdam's Mayor will take place on September 21. For a complete list of candidates, it would be necessary to consult local news sources or official announcements from other political parties.
Severin Fischer, with his past work experience in Potsdam and fresh perspective as an outsider, is leveraging the advantage of being unaffiliated with local politics in his campaign for Potsdam's Mayor. His focus on housing and social cohesion is central to his policy-and-legislation plans, as he aims to distinguish himself from other candidates such as Noosha Aubel, Willo Goepel, Jorn Karlipp, and Bernd Blase who are also running as independents, as well as the party-nominated candidates like the CDU's Willo Goepel, AfD's Chaled-Uwe Said, and SPD's own Severin Fischer.
