Green Party Unveils Sustainable Housing Manifesto in Brighton

The Green Party has revealed its housing sector plans for the upcoming UK General Election 2024, focusing on affordable, sustainable homes while integrating environmental and social justice principles.

At a launch event in Brighton and Hove, the party unveiled their manifesto titled 'Real Hope, Real Change'. The Green Party's approach contrasts with major parties’ more quantitatively ambitious but less explicitly green housing strategies.

Green Party: Affordable, Sustainable Homes

The Green Party emphasizes affordable rents and environmentally sustainable housing. They pledge to provide 150,000 new social homes and aim to integrate new housing into existing communities rather than planning for new towns or urban extensions.

The party intends to make all new homes sustainable, meeting Passivhaus or equivalent standards to promote energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. They also plan to create more social rent homes by taking some from the private sector.

Infrastructure and Tenant Protections

The Greens intend to introduce rent controls and let councils requisition empty properties or those without proper insulation. They also aim to ensure new homes have access to sufficient local infrastructure.

Industry Opinion

While explicit expert analyses on the Green Party’s 2024 housing plans are limited, the National Housing Federation and other sector bodies emphasize the urgency of social housing expansion and infrastructure support.

Labour and Conservatives: Quantitative Targets

The Labour Party has pledged to build 1.5 million new homes by the end of the parliament, linking housing delivery to economic performance and planning reform. The Conservatives have committed to building 1.6 million homes, including social housing, prioritizing brownfield development and countryside protection.

Both parties focus on reforming the private rented sector, banning Section 21 "no-fault" evictions, and integrating infrastructure with new developments. However, the Green Party's approach is more qualitative and rooted in sustainability and social justice.

A Focus on Social and Climate Justice

The Green Party's housing plans are deeply rooted in social and climate justice. They aim to prioritize development benefits for communities and nature, ensuring housing development does not harm nature or contribute to climate change.

Jane Crichton, Associate Director of Lanpro Services, noted the potential for the Greens to exceed housing delivery targets. Siân Berry, the party's Brighton Pavilion candidate, opened the event.

The Green Party's housing sector plans, while less quantitative than those of the major parties, emphasize sustainability, affordability, and social justice, offering a unique perspective in the 2024 General Election.

  1. The Green Party's housing manifesto, titled 'Real Hope, Real Change', emphasizes the provision of 150,000 new social homes and prioritizes sustainable, energy-efficient housing, setting them apart from other parties' more quantitative but less explicitly green housing strategies.
  2. The Green Party's approach to housing also includes measures such as introducing rent controls, let councils requisition empty properties, and ensuring new homes have access to sufficient local infrastructure, focusing not just on numbers but also on sustainability and social justice.
  3. While the Labour Party and Conservatives have set quantitative targets for housing delivery, the Green Party's housing plans are uniquely rooted in social and climate justice, prioritizing development benefits for communities and nature, and ensuring housing development does not harm nature or contribute to climate change.
