Potentially momentous encounter ahead?

The much-anticipated summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, held on August 15, 2025, did not result in a peace agreement or ceasefire regarding the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War.

Despite nearly three hours of talks, Putin refused to agree to pause Russia's military actions, and Russian attacks on Ukraine continued even during the meeting. Trump, on the other hand, suggested that Ukraine must take the initiative in negotiations, shifting the burden towards Kyiv.

The summit, which marked Putin's first visit to the US since 2015 and the first Russia-US presidential summit held on US military grounds since 2007, excluded Ukraine and most European stakeholders. This has led to European concerns about marginalization in decisions affecting their security.

Trump emphasized the need for Ukraine and European countries to be involved, but their voices were notably absent at the summit. While both presidents hinted at a possible future meeting, potentially in Moscow, no firm plans for follow-up negotiations were established.

Trump has portrayed himself as a peacemaker in his second term and has expressed a desire to win the Nobel Peace Prize. However, the Alaska summit did not change the trajectory of the conflict, underscoring persistent divisions.

If territorial questions are discussed, Putin has set tough conditions for a ceasefire, including the halt of Western arms supplies to Ukraine. A ceasefire is necessary before negotiations begin, according to European demands.

Among the demands from Europe is that Ukraine must be present at any follow-up meeting. It remains unclear if Putin will agree to the participation of European leaders in the second meeting, as suggested by Trump.
