Potential stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney could spearhead the Women's World Cup's movement to the town of Wrexham
Wrexham's Racecourse Ground Set for Major Redevelopment
Wrexham's historic Racecourse Ground is undergoing a significant transformation, with plans to expand its capacity and modernise its facilities. The redevelopment, spearheaded by the club's owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, aims to prepare the stadium for hosting major events, such as the 2035 FIFA Women's World Cup.
Since their takeover in 2021, Wrexham has made impressive strides, securing three successive promotions from tier five to tier two of the English men's game. Now, the club is focusing on improving its home ground.
The centrepiece of the redevelopment is the construction of a new 7,500-seater Kop stand, set to open for the 2026/27 season. This is part of a larger plan to expand the stadium capacity, with future targets ranging from about 28,000 to 32,000 seats on the existing site footprint.
Other developments include the redevelopment of the Wrexham Lager Stand and the Tech End, as well as infrastructure improvements like a new concourse, enhanced access via the nearby railway bridge, and modern amenities including undersoil heating, goal-line technology, and improved pitch standards to potentially host rugby matches as well.
The expansion and modernization aim to position the Racecourse Ground as one of the largest stadiums outside the Premier League if the capacity reaches its projected 28,000–32,000 range. This aligns with requirements for international tournaments, making it a suitable venue for the 2035 FIFA Women's World Cup.
The Football Association of Wales (FAW) plans to put forward two stadiums for the tournament, one in Cardiff and one in the north of the nation. If selected, Wrexham could host matches at the 2035 FIFA Women's World Cup, a significant milestone for the Welsh club.
The Racecourse Ground, the oldest international ground in the world, has been planned for international soccer redevelopment. The partnership between Wrexham and McElhenney and Reynolds has led to tour matches for the women's team in the United States in 2024 and in Hong Kong this summer.
The club's fortunes have been documented on the FX television series "Welcome to Wrexham" broadcast on Disney Plus. The Wrexham Women's team were promoted to the Welsh Premier Division in 2023 and finished fourth in the league last season.
Noel Mooney, the chief executive of the FAW, expressed admiration for the Kop development and the vision for the stadium. Stadium architects Populous have been appointed to create a masterplan for the venue's redevelopment. The new Kop Stand will be completed by next summer and will be compliant with UEFA Category Four stadium requirements.
The Wrexham Women's team have partnered with Ally Financial, the largest all-digital bank in the United States, and the Welsh women's team competed at their first-ever senior tournament, the UEFA Women's Euro, in Switzerland last month.
The United Kingdom is the sole bidder to host the 2035 FIFA Women's World Cup. As hosts, Wales will qualify automatically for a tournament they have never competed at before. The redeveloped Racecourse Ground, with its increased capacity and modern facilities, will play a crucial role in Wales' footballing future.
