Potential Resolution in Sight: Pivotal Trump-Putin Meeting in Alaska on August 15 Could Determine Ukraine's Course

US President Donald Trump and Russia's President Vladimir Putin are set to meet next Friday, 15th August 2025, in Alaska, for a highly anticipated summit. The discussions are expected to focus on the ongoing Ukraine War.

Trump has mentioned that there might be some swapping of territories to the betterment of both parties, but there are no indications that Ukraine will have to make territorial concessions in the upcoming summit. In fact, Trump has agreed with European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, that only Ukraine has the authority to negotiate any territorial concessions related to the Ukraine War. This implies that any discussion about Ukraine's territory must directly involve Ukraine's consent and negotiation, suggesting that no concessions can be imposed or agreed upon unilaterally by other parties.

Besides territorial issues, Putin's demand that Ukraine never join NATO and Zelensky's request for a guarantee from the US or NATO that Russia will not resume the war are also points of contention. The summit's details are yet to be disclosed.

Meanwhile, Trump has not imposed additional sanctions on Moscow by the deadline. However, he did single out India for a punitive tariff of 25% for buying Russian oil. This tariff, with an August 27 deadline, is seen as a ploy to put economic pressure on Moscow by getting New Delhi to cut off oil revenue to Moscow.

India's External Affairs Ministry has reiterated India's consistent position for a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict. Ukraine has maintained that its territory is inviolable.

Trump claims President Putin wants to see peace in the Ukraine War, and he himself stated that he had "some very good talks with President Putin" and there is a "very good chance" peace is near. Zelensky is working hard to get everything he needs to sign a settlement, but the process is expected to be complicated.

Kremlin Spokesperson Yury Ushakov confirmed the summit and stated that Russia and the US are close neighbours. A meeting between Witcoff and Putin in Moscow on Wednesday paved the way for the summit.

Both leaders will undoubtedly face challenges in finding a resolution to the Ukraine War, but the summit offers a glimmer of hope for peace in the region.

In the midst of preparations for the US-Russia summit, India has reaffirmed its stance for a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict, aligning itself with Ukraine's position that its territory remains inviolable. The upcoming discussions between Trump and Putin are not just limited to the Ukraine War, as India faces increased tariffs for buying Russian oil, a move aimed at pressuring Moscow economically by reducing oil revenue.
