Last weekend in the Chinese Basketball Association, the Jiangsu Dragons held a solid lead against the Shanghai Sharks in Game 3 of their playoff series, leading 100-96 with just 1:36 remaining. But what happened next defies logic.

Over the next minute, the Dragons inexplicably gave the ball away on five consecutive possessions, allowing Shanghai to mount an incredible 10-0 run. This shocking turn of events sent the Sharks through to the CBA quarterfinals, or so they thought.

Fast forward to this week, and the CBA President, none other than former NBA star Yao Ming, announced some fierce repercussions for their unorthodox style of play. Both teams, Jiangsu and Shanghai, would be slapped with a hefty fine, the equivalent of $727,135 U.S. dollars, for "lack of competitive effort". To make matters worse, the coaches and general managers of both teams were hit with suspensions of up to five years and were barred from participating in the rest of the playoffs.

Was the fix in? Based on the severe nature of these penalties, it certainly looks that way. In fact, Yao has instructed the teams to submit full reports on their conduct during the series.

As it turns out, the suspicious finish of Game 3 wasn't the only unusual aspect of this series. In Game 2, Shanghai lost after sitting many of their key players for an extended period. This peculiar decision may have been related to the third-leading scorer and top assist man of the team, Eric Bledsoe, who played for the NBA's Clippers, Suns, Bucks, and Pelicans before signing with Shanghai in 2022. Bledsoe was already suspended for four games due to an unrelated matter, and extending the series would have meant that he would have missed only one of Shanghai's quarterfinal contests against the Shenzhen Aviators, who have since advanced to the semi-finals.

Bledsoe, who strenuously denies any involvement in the alleged gamesmanship, took to Twitter to voice his frustration:

The situation involving Jiangsu and Shanghai bears resemblance to an infamous incident involving the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA, who were fined $750,000 for "conduct detrimental to the league" after siting key players in a crucial game, resulting in a missed opportunity to qualify for the play-in round.

The Mavericks' questionable tactics are not an isolated example. In recent years, strategic tanking, or managing a team in a way that undermines its chances of success to improve draft odds, has become increasingly common. Factors such as player injuries, load management, and strategic rest all play a role in this phenomenon.

To peer deeper into the shadowy world of sports manipulation, we can turn to Matthew Holt, the President of U.S. Integrity, a firm that provides integrity monitoring and fraud detection services for various sports leagues and betting operators. According to Holt, "Many of the North American scandals have had to do with collegiate players, because they were making no money at the time. But nowadays, I don't think the correlation is there as much."

So as the line between sportsmanship and strategy continues to blur, it's up to the leagues, teams, and regulators to maintain the integrity of the games we all love. As Holt puts it, "If you want your league to have any credibility, then you have to take swift action."

As for the curious case of Jiangsu and Shanghai, only time will tell if the sport's governing bodies can root out the more nefarious elements within their ranks.

  1. The bookmaker had unusual odds for the CBA playoff series between Jiangsu Dragons and Shanghai Sharks, possibly due to the unexpected turn of events in Game 3.
  2. Wagers on sports betting platforms, including basketball games like the CBA playoff series, might have been affected by the unorthodox play strategies used by both teams, as many suspect a possible fix was involved.
  3. If the sport's regulatory bodies can't find evidence of gamesmanship in the CBA series, they may need to revise their approaches to monitoring sports betting lines and possible manipulation in sports betting.
  4. As Shanghai Sharks progresses to the semi-finals, with their top scorer and assist man, Eric Bledsoe, still serving a suspension, allegations about their questionable play and roster management strategies remain a matter of discussion and investigation among sports betting enthusiasts.
