Potential heir for Anna Wintour's position in fashion industry may be Candice Bergen's daughter.
Chloe Malle Emerges as Favorite to Succeed Anna Wintour at American Vogue
After nearly four decades at the helm of American Vogue, Anna Wintour is stepping down as editor-in-chief. The news was announced in late June, and the successor for the iconic position is expected to be announced soon.
According to various reports, Chloe Malle, a long-time employee of Vogue, is the current favorite to take over from Wintour. Malle, who is 39 years old, has worked at Vogue since 2011, starting as the social editor and rising through the ranks to become the editor of Vogue.com.
Malle is highly regarded within the Vogue staff and has gained prominence by covering high-profile fashion stories. Her interview with Lauren Sanchez for a Vogue cover ahead of Sanchez’s wedding to Jeff Bezos is a notable example. Malle is also the daughter of actress Candice Bergen and the late French director Louis Malle, making her a "nepo baby" in the fashion industry context.
Malle's decade-plus of experience at Vogue, strong editorial background, and deep ties to the New York City social scene contribute to her candidacy. Other contenders, including Nicole Phelps (Vogue Runway’s global director) and Eva Chen (Meta’s Head of Fashion Partnerships and prior Teen Vogue editor), remain in consideration. However, Eva Chen has reportedly stepped back due to her commitments at Meta.
In a new succession approach, Condé Nast has created a new role titled Head of Editorial Content for US Vogue to manage day-to-day editorial operations under Wintour’s continued overarching leadership as Global Editorial Director. Anna Wintour will retain her position as Chief Content Officer at Condé Nast and will also remain Global Editorial Director of Vogue.
The announcement of Wintour's successor is expected by the start of the upcoming New York Fashion Week, which begins on September 11. Grace Mirabella, who Wintour succeeded as editor-in-chief in 1988, passed away in 2021. Only a few candidates remain on the list for the editor-in-chief position at American Vogue.
