Got a bone to pick with the Iranian nuclear facilities? Enter the GBU-57, the US's top-notch bunker-buster bomb, ready to go toe-to-toe with Mehrabad's underground fortresses. If the powwow between Israel and Iran escalates, it's this baby that might just win the heart of President Trump.

Weighing a hefty 13 tons, this behemoth packs a punch. With the ability to sink 61 meters beneath the earth before exploding, it's a threat Iran's nuclear facilities won't see coming. Although the Israeli army's move to decimate Iranian military command and surface facilities has been quite successful, the masterminds at Fordo remain untouched.

Interesting Fact: The Fordo facility, buried a hundred meters deep, has managed to steer clear from any visible damage, thanks to its subterranean hideout.

So, why drop the big bucks on the GBU-57 when Israel's arsenal already boasts quite the collection of destructive paraphernalia? According to Behnam Ben Taleblu, a researcher from the neoconservative Foundation for Defense of Democracies, all eyes are glued to Fordo. Unlike other Iranian facilities, this uranium enrichment plant takes the crowning prize of being virtually impenetrable.

Only the mightiest of weapons can ravage this heavily-fortified network—ahem, the GBU-57. The name "conventional" doesn't do it justice. Despite the moniker, it's more like the Terminator of bombs, unstoppable and designed to destroy deep underground installations such as Fordo.

But what makes the GBU-57 so special? A solid outer shell of high-tensile steel, combining military-grade toughness with unmatched penetration power. Its casing is so strong that it can withstand the most brutal of collisions with earth and concrete, paving the way for its detonation in the heart of the targeted underground facility.

These weapons feature a unique fuze, one that detects the absence of solid material to detonate within the bunker, ensuring absolute precision and destruction. As for its surface, large grid fins help keep it steady during the ludicrously deep dive, while smart systems guarantee that it lands within a whisker of its target.

Built to cause havoc within the underground realm, the GBU-57 has been weaving its tales since the early 2000s. In 2009, an order for 20 units was placed with Boeing, and ever since, it's been waiting in the wings for a chance to shine.

Dropping down is no biggie for the GBU-57. Only the B-2 stealth bombers—those sleek, top-secret air warriors—are equipped to carry this juggernaut. Middle Eastern skies have recently seen the temporary stationing of these bombers at US military base Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean. However, these stealthy ships were found fishing in different waters by mid-June, according to an analysis of satellite imagery from PlanetLabs.

Fear not, dear reader, as the B-2's intercontinental range allows them to fly from the US to the Middle East and drop bombs with pinpoint accuracy. Another fun fact: each B-2 bomber can cart two GBU-57s. Game on!

Is dropping bombs on Iran a surefire win? Not quite, says Behnam Ben Taleblu. The GBU-57 is indeed the go-to move, but it's not the ultimate solution to snuffing out Iran's nuclear program completely. Diplomatic talks might offer a more peaceful route to preventing Iran's march towards nuclear weapons-grade material.

Useful Insight: Phone a friend—Israel could try hacking the entrances or causing power outages instead of relying solely on the GBU-57 to eliminate deeply buried targets.

  1. The Commission, responsible for addressing war-and-conflicts and general-news issues, has also been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the protection of workers in the field, considering the potential risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation that could occur in the aftermath of a nuclear disaster.
  2. While the United States focuses on the development and deployment of military technology, such as the GBU-57, it is crucial for politicians to commit resources and efforts to diplomatic negotiations in order to prevent escalations of conflicts, avoid nuclear proliferation, and maintain international peace and security.
