Potential widespread impact from voting malfunction in Wesel - Potential Electoral Divide in Wesel Could Lead to Wide-spread Impacts
In the recent Wesel city council election, a voting error has caused a stir, potentially affecting the results and the future of several parties. The error involved 35 postal votes being sent to the wrong voting district, district 15, where the AfD won a direct mandate for the city council with a one-vote majority over the SPD.
The affected district may need to be re-voted, but the decision lies with the election review committee, which is expected to be set up by the end of November. If the SPD wins the repeat election in district 15, they will enter the Wesel city council with an additional representative.
However, the consequences of this error could be serious for several parties in the Wesel city council, including the Left and FDP, who may lose their faction status. This is due to a legal regulation that a faction must consist of at least three members in a council with more than 50 members. Currently, Left and FDP, along with the AfD, have only two members each in the council.
If the council grows due to the repeat election, Left and FDP will lose their faction status, resulting in the loss of office space, faction subsidies, and personnel costs for a secretariat. Moreover, the parties at risk of losing their faction status would typically be those with the smallest seat counts just meeting the threshold for a faction; this could particularly threaten smaller parties or those marginally qualifying.
The Greens could also face challenges maintaining or gaining influence depending on their seat count and the final election outcome. A voting error in district 15 could potentially change the outcome, allowing the SPD to win the direct mandate, which would result in an additional seat for them. This additional seat will result in a balancing seat, allowing another representative of the Greens to enter the municipal parliament.
Previously, reports suggested that Left and FDP must actually cheer for the AfD in the likely repeat election to not weaken their position in the Wesel city council. However, the spokesman emphasized that faction status means resources in the context of the Wesel city council.
This voting error has turned the focus towards the election review committee, which will have the responsibility of reviewing the votes and determining the final outcome of the election in district 15. The new council will have to set up the election review committee, adding another layer of complexity to the already tense situation.
