Potential Departure of a Seasoned Bayern Player
Thomas Müller Makes Historic Move to MLS
Thomas Müller, a 33-year-old attacking midfielder who has spent the past 25 years at Bayern Munich, is set to embark on a new chapter in his career. After considering potential moves to Saudi Arabia and the North American MLS, Müller has officially transferred to Major League Soccer's Vancouver Whitecaps ahead of the 2025 season.
Müller's decision to leave Bayern Munich comes amidst dissatisfaction with his playing time under new head coach Thomas Tuchel. The German player has had a significant impact on the team's offense during his career, making a record 756 appearances, scoring 250 goals, and providing 276 assists. However, in recent matches, including the Champions League quarter-finals against Manchester City and Bundesliga games against Hertha and Werder, Müller has received limited playing time.
The transfer process for Müller to join Vancouver Whitecaps was facilitated by MLS, who had to acquire Müller's MLS Discovery Rights from FC Cincinnati in exchange for General Allocation Money totaling $400,000 (spread over 2025 and 2026), plus conditional amounts. Vancouver Whitecaps describe Müller as a "world-class," tactically intelligent "Raumdeuter" (interpreter of space), expected to boost the team's creativity, work ethic, and leadership on the pitch.
Müller's signing is pending an International Transfer Certificate, visa, and work permit to officially join Vancouver’s roster. The Whitecaps currently compete near the top of the MLS Western Conference and target a championship push with Müller in their squad. Prior rumors suggested Müller might join Los Angeles FC, another Bayern partner club, but he opted for Vancouver instead.
Müller's move away from Bayern Munich marks the end of a 15-year career with the club for the German player. He has won numerous titles with Bayern, including eight Bundesliga titles, six German Cups, and the Champions League in 2013. Oliver Kahn, the current chairman of Bayern, expressed a desire for Müller to continue playing with the club until the end of his contract, which extends until the summer of 2024. However, with no specific negotiations taking place, it remains to be seen if Müller will return to Bayern in the future.
