Rostock's Olympic Bid on Hold: Rostock's OB Pauses Decision on Olympic Bid Application
Delay in Rostock's Olympic Bid Decision by City Officials - Postponed Decision on Rostock's Olympic Bid Pending Further Discussion
It's bloody crazy, innit? Rostock's mayor, Eva-Maria Kröger (Lefties), has shockingly put off a decision in the city council about Rostock's bid for a location outside Germany during the country's Olympic application for the Games in 2036, 2040, or 2044. She lodged an urgent proposal just before a city council meeting, and then promptly withdrew it until the next session of the Rostock city council on July 23rd.
"Don't freak out because the city council's decision on this matter will be in June or July 2025. But to be fair, we need to send a strong and thorough signal before the summer break, and that requires careful prep work. There are legitimate questions that can't be answered in detail until this meeting", she explained in a note to city council members.
SPD and Greens call for public vote
It was previously announced that SPD and Greens were submitting a joint request for a public vote on the question of the Olympics. There was also a proposal suggesting a complete rejection of a bid for the 2036 games, as this year marks the 100th anniversary of the Olympics in Berlin, where the Nazis were in power back then.
By the end of May, four German cities and regions had submitted their bid to the German Olympic Sports Federation (DOSB) for the hosting of the Olympic Games 2036, 2040, or 2044. The final decision on a German bid concept is expected to be made by no later than the fall of 2026. There's a huge interest in Rostock and Warnemünde from several candidates, according to the city administration.
Two past attempts
"Rostock, with the sailing area off Warnemünde, is highly suitable for hosting Olympic sailing competitions. Additionally, other Olympic events like football at the Ostseestadion, handball, basketball, volleyball, and Goalball could be offered in the existing facilities in StadtHalle or HanseMesse", it stated in the withdrawn resolution.
All previous attempts to bring Olympic contests to Warnemünde have failed. During the unsuccessful Olympic bids of Berlin for 2000 and Leipzig for 2012, Warnemünde was a hot candidate for the sailing events.

- In light of Rostock's City Council delaying a decision on their Olympic bid application, it's uncertain whether the coastal city of Rostock will be able to host Olympic sailing competitions in the future, just as it failed to do so during the Olympic bids for Berlin in 2000 and Leipzig in 2012.
- SPD and Greens have called for a public vote on the question of the Olympics in Rostock, emphasizing the significance of involving the public in decisions related to major sporting events such as the Olympics, similar to the centennial anniversary of the Berlin Olympics in 2036 or any other year Germany might bid for the Games.
