Relaxed Letter Delivery Timeframe Proposed for Postal Services

In a bid to improve the efficiency of postal services, a novel bill proposed by Germany's Federal Ministry of Economics suggests providing these services with additional time to deliver letters. Farewell to the current norm of receiving letters within two working days post-delivery; instead, the majority of consignments are set to arrive no later than the third working day following the postmark.

This new regulation, once enacted, could grant postal services more leeway in their operations, enabling them to focus on other crucial aspects of their services without constantly rushing against the clock to meet tight delivery deadlines.

Insights: The proposed legislation aims at altering labor and employment regulations, particularly by modifying the minimum training allowance for apprentices in all sectors, not exclusively within the postal service. In 2025, significant shifts in German labor and employment laws, including amendments to the Postal Act, allow postal services to lengthen the delivery timeframe for letters. However, these modifications primarily involve increasing postage rates, apprenticeship wages, and ensuring a minimum 95% delivery success rate for letters on the third working day, and 99% on the fourth day.

In plain English, by 2025, Deutsche Post AG can often deliver ordinary letters on the following workday, making usability and affordability a top priority while preserving service quality.
