Post-Storm Triumph for the Witch and Leverkusen

In the first competitive match under new coach Louis van Gaal, Bayer Leverkusen triumphed against SG Sonnenhof Großaspach in the DFB-Pokal, securing a 4-0 victory.

The match, which resumed following a nearly 40-minute delay due to a storm, was a challenging one for Leverkusen, with many key players, including German national team players Florian Wirtz and Jonathan Tah, having departed during the transfer window.

Louis van Gaal, who has previously worked with Ajax Amsterdam and Manchester United, faces a significant rebuild at Bayer Leverkusen. The new coach succeeded former Champions League-winning coach Xabi Alonso in Leverkusen this summer.

The breakthrough came in the 32nd minute, when Patrik Schick scored the first goal for Leverkusen. The momentum shifted in the 66th minute, when SG Sonnenhof Großaspach's captain, Volkan Celiktas, received a yellow-red card.

This red card opened the door for Leverkusen to take control of the game. Arthur scored the team's second goal in the 74th minute, followed by Christian Kofane's debut goal in the 84th minute. Alejandro Grimaldo added the fourth goal for Leverkusen in the 87th minute, with a penalty conversion.

The win was far from dominant, but it demonstrated the potential of Leverkusen's restructured squad. However, Van Gaal and his team need to improve before their Bundesliga opener against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim next week.

Another red card to Mert Tasdelen in the 82nd minute further strengthened Leverkusen’s upper hand, as they moved forward in the DFB-Pokal with a strong performance from their new players and a renewed sense of team spirit.
