Post-Pyrotechnic Incident: DFB Commences Legal Actions Against FC Hansa
In a troubling turn of events, the German Football Association (DFB) has initiated a procedure against FC Hansa Rostock following a pyrotechnic incident during the 3rd division match between FC Hansa Rostock and TSV 1860 Munich.
During the game, a nine-year-old boy sustained severe burns after a substance fell from above during a fireworks display, causing him to catch fire. The boy was subsequently transferred to a specialist clinic in Lübeck for treatment. The specific nature of his injuries has not been detailed.
The mother of the injured boy has not ruled out the possibility of suing the club, and the city of Rostock has criticised the club's execution of the event. The incident has received criticism for its execution, with no permission for the fireworks having been granted by the DFB's "Prevention & Safety & Football Culture" commission, as no such application was made.
FC Hansa's chairman, Ronald Maul (52), has expressed deep regret over the tragic incident. The club has reportedly been in contact with the family of the injured boy.
The pyrotechnics during the match were primarily set off by supporters of the home team, FC Hansa Rostock, both during and after the match. The unauthorized pyrotechnics included a city-approved farewell pyrotechnic show for the old floodlight masts, which led to the severe injury of the nine-year-old boy in the stands.
Ulrich Kunze, spokesman for the Hanseatic city, stated that only twelve effect hand flares per floodlight tower had a permit, and all other ignited pyrotechnic devices were neither applied for nor approved. The substance that fell from above during the fireworks was likened to "liquid fire" or "magma" by the mother of the injured boy.
The Ostsee-Zeitung reported on the incident, which occurred as over 24,000 spectators bid farewell to the four floodlight towers of Ostseestadion after Rostock's 2:1 victory. The DFB's Control Committee is currently preoccupied with the investigation into this incident, with the DFB's response to the inquiry confirming a report by Bild.
Several people, including the nine-year-old boy, were injured during the incident. The DFB has initiated a procedure against FC Hansa Rostock due to the use of pyrotechnics by Rostock fans during the match.
