Post-mortem examination of Matilde Muñoz, a woman from Spain, murdered in Indonesia, reveals cause of death as suffocation
In the picturesque Senggigi area of Lombok, Indonesia, the West Lombok Police are currently handling an investigation into the suspicious death of Matilde Muñoz, a 72-year-old Spanish woman. Matilde had been staying at the Bumi Aditya hotel for an extended period, having arrived in Lombok in June. Tragically, her lifeless body was found on a beach in Senggigi on August 30, after her family and friends alerted authorities to her disappearance in July. The autopsy, conducted on September 4 at the police hospital in Mataram, Lombok, revealed signs of trauma to the head, neck, and chest, suggesting violence may have played a role in her death. The cause of her death was determined to be asphyxiation, along with signs of blunt force violence. The forensic examination strengthened the suspicion that Matilde died as a result of violence. Her body was found face down, with clothes and jewelry, including two necklaces with shell and Buddha figure pendants. The body remained in the generator room of the hotel for four days before it was moved and buried on the beach on August 24. The exact time between the body being moved to the back area of the hotel and being buried is not specified. Two men, an employee and a former employee of the Bumi Aditya hotel where Matilde was staying, were arrested by the Lombok Police in connection with her death. These two suspects have reportedly confessed to killing her. Their specific identities are not disclosed in the available information. The Lombok Police are still completing the case file to ensure a timely handover to the Prosecutor's Office. The suspects will be charged with premeditated murder and robbery resulting in death, as 3 million rupiah (around $182) was stolen from Matilde. It's worth noting that the average monthly salary in the country is equivalent to the amount stolen, making this crime particularly heinous. Matilde Muñoz would have turned 73 this month. She was an experienced traveler, having ventured to Lombok. Our thoughts are with her family and friends during this difficult time. The investigation is ongoing, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
