Post-mortem examination findings imminent in the case of a Black Delta State university student discovered hanged from a tree

In the serene campus of Delta State University in Mississippi, a somber mood has settled following the discovery of 21-year-old Black student, Demartravion 'Trey' Reed, hanging from a tree near the pickleball courts.

The tragic incident, which occurred around 7 a.m. on Monday, has sent shockwaves through the community. Reed's body was found by a faculty member, prompting the immediate cancellation of classes for the day.

Delta State President Dan Ennis acknowledged the emotional implications of the incident, particularly in light of Mississippi's Jim Crow-era history. He stated that the incident has stirred tensions on campus, promising a thorough investigation and support for the student body.

The body of Reed has been taken to the Mississippi State Medical Examiner's Office for a full autopsy. The results are expected to be available in 24 to 48 hours. Preliminary reports from the Bolivar County Coroner's Office indicate no evidence of foul play. However, the medical examiner's findings are yet to be confirmed, with national civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump commissioning an independent autopsy.

Crump, who has been retained by Reed's family, has also called on police and university officials to release any video footage related to Reed's death. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is assisting in the investigation, but the FBI field office in Jackson, Mississippi, is only in regular contact with local authorities.

Interestingly, another man, 35-year-old Cory Zukatis, was found hanging from a tree in Vicksburg, about 100 miles south of Cleveland, Mississippi, on Monday. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is not involved in the investigation of Zukatis' death.

The circumstances surrounding Reed's death have raised questions, with the NAACP expressing skepticism towards the preliminary findings of the police investigation. Ennis, the president of Delta State, has urged patience, emphasizing that the investigation remains an 'active investigation.'

The tragic death of Demartravion 'Trey' Reed has cast a shadow over the usually vibrant Delta State campus. As the investigation unfolds, the community awaits answers and closure.
