Smashin'through the Tough Greens of Oakmont

All right, let's chat about Dustin Johnson and the upcoming U.S. Open at the legendary Oakmont course. The 40-year-old golfing ace, who claimed the 2020 Masters, calls Oakmont the most challenging course he's tackled so far. Yet, his 2016 U.S. Open win at Oakmont gives him confidence heading into this week's tournament.

"I've got faith in this course," Johnson bragged. "I performed pretty darn good here in '16, and this week creates a bit of pressure on the drive. But I'm nailing those tee shots these days."

You better hit it straight to make a chance to win here, buddy! Johnson secured a four-under 276 victory in 2016, outsmarting Oakmont's infamous rough.

"I drove it like a champ," Johnson recalled. "I don't know if I'll manage the same performance this time around, but it seems a bit tougher, perhaps due to the added length."

Johnson's been on a roll lately, snagging wins every year for the past six years. He's even jumped from the PGA Tour to the Saudi-funded LIV Golf, bagging three victories in just three seasons. But it's been a while since his last win, back in '24 in Las Vegas.

"I ain't slipping," he assured us. "My scores might not paint the whole picture, but I'm close to greatness. My game's starting to find its flow again."

Does playing in LIV Golf put more pressure on him for the majors?

"Not really," Johnson shrugged. "It's still the U.S. Open, still the same pressure, no matter where I'm teeing off."

Johnson's only made a couple of visits back to Oakmont since his famous '16 win, the other occurring when he was invited for an honorary membership.

"They must be stoked I'm back," Johnson joked. "I never drop by, but it's nice to be back here. The course is as tough as I remember, if not tougher. Oakmont is where I made some unforgettable memories."

So, what can we expect from Johnson at the 2025 U.S. Open? Well, he's treating Oakmont like an old friend, reminiscing about past victories and preparing to tackle its challenging layout once more. This man's a force to be reckoned with, folks, and you better watch out for him on the leaderboard this week!

  1. "With Oakmont's notorious rough and challenging layout, weather-forecasting may play a crucial role in Johnson's strategy for the U.S. Open."
  2. "Aside from golf, Dustin Johnson has also shown interest in sports like racing, particularly Formula 1, which he enjoys watching on his off days."
  3. "Tennis, another sport Johnson admires, has especially inspired him during his training sessions on the range; he often imagines himself as a top player on the court rather than the course."
