Post-Elections: Greens show restraint but prepare for coalition talks

The Greens in the Harburg district assembly have formed a negotiation team as they explore potential coalition options following the recent district election. The Greens, who suffered a significant drop in representation, have expressed disappointment but are not planning to "fall into depression."

In the election, the Greens secured 15.9% of the votes, a decrease of 9.9 percentage points compared to the previous election. This drop resulted in the Greens losing six seats, reducing their representation from 14 to 8 members. However, the Greens managed to remain stronger than the AfD, with the AfD gaining four percentage points but only having seven seats in the assembly.

Sarah Pscherer, co-chair of the local Green chapter, described the significant drop in votes as "disappointing." Despite this, Pscherer expressed hope for the Greens' future involvement in the "ruling" faction of the district assembly. Half of the Green members in the district assembly are new, meaning 10 out of the previous 14 members are no longer present. Among those no longer present is Heinke Ehlers, a Green member since 2000.

The SPD, Volt, or the Left are potential partners for a coalition with the Greens in the district assembly. Historically, in the Harburg district assembly, the Greens have cooperated with SPD and the Left, supported by past election and coalition patterns. A SPD-Greens-Left coalition or SPD-Greens coalition are mentioned as possible coalition options in related contexts. The composition of the SPD, Volt, or the Left members in the district assembly is not specified in the text.

At least three parties would be required for a coalition with the Greens in the district assembly. The Greens have not repeated their previous disappointments about the election results and are ready to begin negotiations. The Greens express optimism about their future role in the district assembly and are determined to contribute to the betterment of the district.

Despite the challenges ahead, the current composition of the Green members in the district assembly is six women and two men. The negotiation team, formed by the Greens, will work tirelessly to find a suitable coalition that will allow the Greens to continue their work in the district assembly and achieve their goals for a sustainable and equitable future.
