Matthias Helferich, the controversial AfD Bundestag member from Dortmund, is in the hot seat once again. Emails, allegedly penned by Helferich over a decade ago, have surfaced in "Der Spiegel", revealing a potential extremist side to this divisive figure. The emails contain jokes about burning refugee homes and racial theories, yet their authenticity remains unverified. Helferich denies writing them and has pledged to lodge a criminal complaint against unknown parties.

The Controversial Emails

The content of the emails, now public, depicts a disturbing picture of Helferich. Liberal-minded AfD members have long viewed him as extreme, and these leaked emails only serve to solidify that judgment. The alleged emails show Helferich utilizing inflammatory language, such as joking about refugee homes being set ablaze ("Christmas, Christmas, a refugee home is burning") and discussing racial theories. Regrettably, the emails' authenticity cannot be confirmed as of yet.

A Rift Among the AfD

As tensions within the AfD escalate, the relationship between Helferich and party leaders Martin Vincentz and Alice Weidel appears to be growing increasingly strained. Vincentz had publicly urged Helferich to take action against the publication of the emails and decried the potential damage to the party's reputation. However, it seems Helferich will not be filing a lawsuit against "Der Spiegel" itself, but rather the unknown source behind the dissemination of the emails.

An Ongoing Battle

This latest episode adds fuel to an already simmering conflict between Vincentz, Helferich, and the federal executive. Vincentz has long been pushing for Helferich's expulsion, leading to backlash from within the party. Helferich, for his part, accuses Vincentz of pursuing a personal vendetta against him. The long-running dispute is set to resurface in upcoming party leadership meetings in Berlin.
