Possible shift in transparency in England's top league following potential Liverpool title victory
In a stunning surprise, Liverpool has claimed the coveted Premier League title, marking the first instance of an underdog team achieving this victory since 2017. This success, unlike Leicester City's historic upset in 2016, hasn't been anticipated in the slightest.
When the season kickstarted, Liverpool wasn't even considered a title contender. With bookmakers pricing them at 13/2, and the departure of iconic manager Jurgen Klopp looming large, it seemed that their year would be marred with challenges.
Liverpool's coach, Arne Slot, had a different vision. He inherited a rebuilt squad under Klopp's guidance and, through persistent hard work, transformed it into a formidable force - with Mohamed Salah's age-defying form and dynamic midfielders like Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch setting the pace. Slot's steady influence and patient approach seem to have paid off, whilst rivals such as Manchester City and Arsenal have faltered.
However, it's not yet clear if this victory signals the beginning of a new era of dominance for Slot's team. Winning the title in their debut Premier League season, Slot now finds himself in an exclusive club - one that includes Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti, Manuel Pellegrini, and Antonio Conte[5]. Only Mourinho, though, successfully defended the title in his subsequent season.
Since 2009, only Guardiola's City has managed to retain the title more than once, taking the championship in six out of seven seasons between 2018 and 2024[6]. Despite losing key players like Kevin De Bruyne and Kyle Walker, the City squad is expected to undergo a significant transformation under the oversight of City's Abu Dhabi owners. The question is whether Guardiola can build another great team, and if Erling Haaland's entrance will lead to a more predictable style of play[4].
Liverpool too is gearing up for a busy offseason, with just one signing - Federico Chiesa - since Slot took charge. Salah and Virgil van Dijck's contract extensions have quelled speculation about their futures, but their age (33 and 34, respectively) is a concern. Liverpool will need to find another goalscorer to share the burden with Salah and fill the void if Trent Alexander-Arnold, reported to be in discussions with Real Madrid, leaves the team[2].
Arsenal's consistent finish as the runner-up suggests that they may still be on the cusp of reaching their peak, while Newcastle, Aston Villa, and Chelsea are all building impressive squads and preparing to challenge for the title[7]. The future, it seems, is wide open.
