Multiple voting options could potentially be available during election day - Possible multiple referendums may be held on election day as suggested by the election leader.

The state parliament is yet to announce the potential referendums that may be held alongside the next state elections on September 20, 2026. These elections, which also include district assemblies, are set to take place in just over four years.

State Election Commissioner, Stephan Brochler, is preparing for up to three referendums on issues such as climate adaptation, reducing advertising in the city, and largely banning private car traffic within the S-Bahn ring.

Brochler is advocating for these referendums to be held on the same day as the elections, citing the potential savings in costs and the avoidance of long lines at polling stations. However, the question of whether the number of polling stations and election helpers would need to be increased arises, especially if all elections and referendums are held on the same day.

The commissioner is concerned about the organizational challenge that may come with holding multiple referendums on the same day, given the 2021 election fiasco where votes were cast for multiple elections and a referendum at the same time.

If the state parliament decides to proceed with the referendums, they must deal with the issues first. Once the issues are approved, and if necessary signatures are collected within four months from at least 7% of eligible voters, a vote on the respective issue will take place.

The date for the vote on the referendums is still open. Brochler suggests that every eligible voter should receive information about the topics of the referendums to ensure they can make an informed decision. The citizens, in turn, would have to inform themselves if the referendums are indeed held on election day.

Separating the dates for elections and referendums would incur significant additional costs, according to Brochler. He believes that every eligible voter should have access to clear and concise information about the topics of the referendums, regardless of whether they are held on the same day as the elections or not.

In conclusion, while the details of the upcoming referendums are still uncertain, the state election commissioner is preparing for potential referendums on climate adaptation, reducing advertising in the city, and largely banning private car traffic within the S-Bahn ring. The date for the vote on these referendums is yet to be announced.
