Possible increase in availability of European goods in Danish supermarkets

A popular Danish supermarket group will soon add a label to their products as a response to consumer demands for more European brand options.

Starting in March, electronic price tags in Salling Group's Bilka, Føtex, and Netto supermarkets will display a small star, signifying brands owned by European companies, according to Salling Group CEO Anders Hagh.

"We've been hearing from our customers who want to buy groceries from European brands," says Hagh. "So, we're offering a new label to make it easier for them to find suitable options."

This move comes after the rise of the Facebook group, Boykot varer fra USA ("Boycott Goods from the USA") which has gained over 30,000 members due to increasing sentiments against American products following President Trump's push for a trade war with Europe.

A store owner in Copenhagen, Mette Heerulff Christiansen, who owns the delicatessen Broders, has considered cutting back on American products due to growing customer rejection of them.

Although other European supermarkets are not widely adopting such labeling strategies like Denmark, Salling Group assures that it will continue to stock products from the rest of the world.

"It's up to our customers to choose," Hagh stated. "The star label is simply an additional helping hand for those looking for European brands."

Enrichment Data:European supermarkets other than Salling Group are not widely following Denmark's strategy of introducing labeled European brand products. While Mercadona in Spain is focusing on nutrition information, and Jerónimo Martins is investing in store expansions and operations, no similar labeling for European products has been reported yet [2]. The trend in Denmark is distinct due to geopolitical circumstances such as Greenland and U.S. trade policies leading to general consumer preferences for European products [1][3]. The #BoycottUSA hashtag has garnered attention on social media, but it hasn't triggered similar labeling strategies across Europe. Instead, consumer trends and labeling strategies differ significantly across European countries due to local preferences and political contexts [2].
