Possible End for Adams' Topic-Divergent Tuesday Meetings?
Mayor Eric Adams Alters Press Question Practices
New York City Mayor Eric Adams has made some changes to his press question practices, shifting away from the weekly "off-topic Tuesdays" and opting for questions after scheduled announcements and events.
In the past, Adams was known for his busy schedule of appearances on local TV news broadcasts, cable news shows, radio programs, and podcasts. He also held press conferences on Tuesdays, which were commonly referred to as "off-topic Tuesdays." These press conferences provided a platform for reporters to ask general questions, not just questions pertaining to a particular announcement.
However, the last off-topic Tuesday with reporters was held on June 24, 2023. This change came after a controversial incident where Adams admonished Daily News reporter Chris Sommerfeldt for calling out questions without being called on during an off-topic press conference in June 2023. As a result, Sommerfeldt was banned from attending the press conferences.
Following this incident, Adams launched weekly press conferences in October 2023. During these press conferences, senior members of the administration would tote massive binders for general questions from reporters. However, this practice changed after Adams was indicted on federal bribery and fraud charges (which were later dropped).
In the weeks that followed, Adams resumed taking questions here and there at press events. On July 21, 2023, after speaking about the use of police drones to combat subway surfing, Adams took eight questions from reporters on different topics. On June 17, 2023, at an off-topic Tuesday availability at City Hall, Adams responded to at least 20 questions.
Despite these changes, the off-topic press conferences held in City Hall have ceased without fanfare. There is no clear explanation as to why Adams discontinued "off-topic Tuesdays" or his current approach to taking questions from reporters.
