Portuguese drama On Falling triumphs at European Film Awards in Berlin

A Portuguese drama has taken centre stage at this year’s European Film Awards in Berlin. On Falling, the first feature by director Laura Carreira, received a major prize at the ceremony. The film was produced with support from Ken Loach’s production company.

On Falling, also known as Falling, follows a story rooted in humanist themes. Its debut marked a significant moment for Carreira, who stepped into the spotlight as a new voice in European cinema.

During her acceptance speech, the director highlighted the importance of a humanist spirit in times of struggle. She described the film’s message as one of quiet resistance and solidarity. The project gained early attention after Ken Loach’s team came on board. Their involvement helped bring Carreira’s vision to a wider audience, reinforcing the film’s impact at the awards.

The win places Carreira among rising talents in European filmmaking. On Falling now stands as an award-winning work, backed by one of Britain’s most respected production houses. The recognition also underscores the film’s themes of resilience and human connection.
