Portugal will officially acknowledge the Palestinian state in September
In a coordinated diplomatic move, 16 countries, including France, Canada, Australia, and Portugal, have urged for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and called for international recognition of the State of Palestine. The crisis in Gaza has led to a deteriorating situation, resulting in a famine that has claimed over 100 lives, including children.
This call for recognition reflects ongoing concerns about the stalled peace process, increasing tensions, and the desire to uphold international law and human rights. The joint appeal, endorsed by Andorra, Canada, Australia, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Slovenia, and Spain, urges recognition to affirm the Palestinian people's right to self-determination and to encourage renewed negotiations toward a two-state solution based on internationally agreed parameters.
The statement was published by the French Foreign Ministry, highlighting the frustration with the lack of progress in ending the decades-long conflict and aiming to push the international community, including Israel and Palestinian leaders, toward constructive dialogue and a sustainable peace agreement.
Prime Minister of Portugal, Luís Montenegro, announced on Thursday that his country will be recognizing the state of Palestine in September, following similar announcements made by Canada, France, the UK, and other nations.
