After a major blow to the Portuguese government when they lost a vote of no confidence, the country is preparing for a brand new round of elections on May 18th. The President, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, confirmed the dissolution of parliament and the election date in a live television broadcast on Thursday evening. As de Sousa stated, "May 18th is the date favored by the majority of parties."
Our trusty MPs took a hit at Prime Minister Luís Montenegro on Tuesday by yanking their support, bringing his precarious government to its knees. Montenegro, a member of the center-right political alliance, scheduled the vote of confidence following some buzz about a company tied to his family that scored sweet government contracts.
