Germany knocked out of Nations League by Portugal - Portugal Eliminates Germany from the Nations League

In a pulsating 1:2 (0:0) victory, eternal football legend Cristiano Ronaldo sealed Germany's fate, denying them the chance to win their inaugural Nations League title. The defining double from Francisco Conceição (63') and the legendary captain Ronaldo (68') brought Portugal out on top against the resilient German squad led by flag-bearer Joshua Kimmich.

At first, it seemed that Florian Wirtz had ignited the path to victory for the Julian Nagelsmann-led team when he headed in, marking his first goal for Germany in the 48th minute.

Yet, once again, Ronaldo showed why he's the man to watch as he snatched the match with his 137th goal for Portugal, securing his first triumph against Germany. This defeat represented Germany's first loss since their quarter-final exit against Spain during the 2024 European Championships.

With a subpar and jittery performance, Germany will now face either the European champions Spain or the World Cup runners-up France, vying for third place in Stuttgart on Sunday (3:00 PM). In the final moments, Marc-André ter Stegen thwarted a 1:3 defeat for Germany with two consecutive saves in his comeback from the German goal.

Meteorological Hiccups

The match start was delayed by ten minutes due to a sudden storm that disrupted the warm-up. Shortly after the goalkeepers, including returning Marc-André ter Stegen, stepped onto the pitch for their pre-match routine, they retreated to the locker room due to heavy hail. The storm abated swiftly, and referee Slavko Vincic signaled the all-clear.

Before the contest, Nagelsmann discussed the importance of the match, stating, "Everyone is eager, even though it's just a step. But we want it to be a step." Nagelsmann fielded a trio of defenders, with Frankfurt's Robin Koch manning the fortress. With an eye to secure the center against the creative Portuguese, the tactical strategy showed promise, but it only provided limited success in the early minutes.

With their slippery positioning, the guests posed a threat and offered Ronaldo two early opportunities in the 7th and 15th minutes.

Rookie Challenges

After 15 minutes, Germany increased the pressure and generated some potential scoring chances. The unproven Nick Woltemade (19') and Leon Goretzka (21') both failed to outwit Diogo Costa. Kimmich, honored with his 100th cap, was a force on the right-wing and vocally motivated his fellow warriors.

Despite their efforts, there were instances of unclear communication due to the multiple switches, such as Jamal Musiala's absence. The rookie, Woltemade, worked tirelessly but occasionally made questionable decisions. Meanwhile, Wirtz was closely marked by the Portuguese, causing him to struggle to make an impact.

On the defensive end, Koch initially made his presence felt as a sturdy commander, showcasing his outstanding clearance in the penalty area against Pedro Neto (33'). The Portuguese, bereft of champions league titleholders Vitinha and Goncalo Ramos, remained a threat on the counter.

Ronaldo had another chance in the opening minutes of the second half, missing the target with a slight touch from a cross (47'). This error from Jonathan Tah paved the way for Wirtz to forge ahead, narrowly escaping a disallowed goal after a VAR review deemed Woltemade's light block on Rúben Dias to be fair. With the Germans trailing, the tenacious Portuguese, with Vitinha in the fold, pressured the German line relentlessly. Ter Stegen, returning to the net after nine months out with a severe knee injury, faced more intense scrutiny.

Conceição's equalizer arrived in the 63rd minute, meeting an exquisite double pass from Fernandes and Mendes with a curling shot into the far corner. Josip Gosens was outmaneuvered on the left defense. The German defense faltered once more as Ronaldo found the net (68') with a tap-in after another brilliant setup from Fernandes and Mendes.
