The Portuguese canoeing team is making a strong showing at the 2023 World Championships in Milan, with several athletes vying for top positions in various events. Among the notable participants is 36-year-old Fernando Pimenta, who is competing in his signature distance, but also challenging himself in other events.

Pimenta, a Lisbon native, has a impressive track record. He won the K1 1000 meters championship two years ago in Duisburg, Germany, and secured a silver medal in the K1 5000 meters and a bronze in K1 500. However, his only Olympic event is his signature distance.

Meanwhile, the Portuguese canoeing team is defending two titles won in 2023: K1 1000 meters and K2 500. The team members, Tomasz Baptista, Joao Ribeiro, and Gustavo Goncalves, are key players in the men's K4 500m boat. Baptista and Ribeiro also won the men's K2 500m world title that year.

Baptista and Ribeiro are the reigning world champions in the K2 500m event, demonstrating their top form and competitiveness on the international stage. Baptista, in particular, showed versatility and stamina by competing in the K1 200m event at the same championships, despite facing physical pain shortly before the World Championships.

The quartet of Ribeiro, Baptista, Goncalves, and newcomer Pedro Casinha won the absolute European title in the K4 500 meters event in June. Goncalves and Casinha are under-23 world champions in the K2 500 meters event, which they won in July. This is the first time Goncalves and Casinha are participating in the Milan Worlds.

Pimenta will also participate in Italy in K1 500 and K1 5000 meters in addition to his signature distance. The K4 500 meters event, however, is not his signature distance nor does it include any Olympic events for him.

The K4 500 meters event is a new competition for the Portuguese canoeing team in the Milan Worlds. It will be interesting to see how the team, particularly the quartet of Ribeiro, Baptista, Goncalves, and Casinha, will perform in this event.

The success of the K4 500 meters team in the European Championships was their first race together, and they have been training hard to make a strong showing at the World Championships. The Portuguese canoeing team is participating in the Milan Worlds today, and fans are eagerly awaiting their performances.
