Portugal climbs up the rankings
In the latest FIFA Men's World Ranking, following the conclusion of the UEFA Nations League, some significant changes have occurred, with Portugal making a dramatic ascent to 6th place. Argentina remains the uncontested number one, maintaining its position since April 2023.
Portugal's rise was sparked by their triumph in the UEFA Nations League, where they defeated Spain in the final via penalties, securing a significant boost to their ranking. This victory also saw Spain climb to second place, while France held onto third.
England maintained its steady fourth place, while Brazil remained in fifth. Surprisingly, the Netherlands slipped in rankings despite recent wins, illustrating the complex FIFA points calculations based on opponent strength and tournament results.
Croatia's consistent international performances have brought them back into the top 10, replacing Italy, who dropped to 11th after disappointing results. Germany returned to the top ten, fueled by a strong Nations League run, but was knocked out by Portugal.
Argentina, despite a small dip in points, remains the clear leader, fuelled by their World Cup success and consistent performance. Belgium and Germany hold their positions in the top 10, while Spain and France continue to close the gap.
Among Portuguese-speaking African countries, Cape Verde is the highest-ranked, in 72nd place. Other notable rankings include England in 4th, Brazil in 5th, and Croatia in 10th. Noteworthy climbers include Mexico, who rose near the top 10 after winning the Gold Cup.
The FIFA rankings also reflect Italy's decline, with Mozambique in 99th place, Angola in 85th, and East Timor in 195th. Macau, with a score of 865.29, ranks 192, while São Tomé and Príncipe sits just below them with a score of 865.08. Guinea-Bissau is ranked 131, with a score of 1,119.54, and Brazil is in 5th place with a score of 1,758.18.
The next FIFA ranking update is scheduled for September 18, 2025, promising more shifts and changes in the global football landscape.
