Portugal advances past Iran in World Cup, sets sights on next opponent
It's bloody brilliant news, mate! Portugal's beach soccer squad bagged first place in Group B on Monday, beating Iran 7-5. Now they know they'll be going up against Japan in the quarter-finals of the World Cup this Thursday.
The third-round showdown for the group's lead got off to a good start for the Iranians, with Mohammadali Nazarzadeh scoring the first goal in the third minute. That prompted a response from André Lourenço in the tenth. By the end of the first period, Reza Amiri had made it 2-1 for Iran.
But the comeback came in the second half, with goals from Jordan Santos, Rui Coimbra, André Lourenço again, and Bé Martins turning the score around to 2-5. Bé Martins scored again in the twenty-fifth, and Miguel Pintado added another to make it 7-2. The Iranian team tried to close the gap through Ali Mokhtari, Nazarzadeh, and Movahed, but couldn't quite manage it.
With three wins in three matches, Portugal is now set to face Japan in the quarter-finals on Thursday at 13:30. The semi-finals are scheduled for Saturday, and the final will be on Sunday in the Seychelles.
