Events Combined: Pope's Visit Coincides with Study Event, Trade Fair, and Carnival - Pope's Visit, Nationwide Event: Observing Mass, Fasting Coordinated in Country's Regions

While a Pope's presence in Rhineland-Palatinate may have been brief, it left a lasting impression. From carnival floats to city tours, the Popes have left a mark on this German state. Yet, many Catholics here have never encountered a Pope in their lifetime.

A Brief History of Pope Visits

Pope appearances in Germany have been rare, and even rarer in Rhineland-Palatinate. As the new Pope Leo XIV hails from the USA, it remains to be seen if he will break this trend, with locations like the US air bases in Ramstein and Spangdahlem, and the US garrison town Baumholder, maintaining ties to his homeland. The state has only hosted two Popes in the 1980s.

John Paul II's Visits to Mainz and Speyer

Pope John Paul II, the first Pope in nearly 200 years to set foot on German soil again, visited Rhineland-Palatinate in 1980 and 1987. His first visit took him to Mainz, where he met with Cardinal Hermann Volk and Karl Lehmann. The Pontiff was also driven through the city in his Popemobile.

In 1987, John Paul II revisited Rhineland-Palatinate and met with then-Chancellor Helmut Kohl in Speyer. He also beatified two witnesses of faith from the Nazi era. With around 60,000 believers in attendance, he delivered a sermon advocating for a united Europe from the Atlantic to the Urals.

A Century Event in Speyer

Although only in Speyer for seven hours, this visit left a lasting impression on the city. Bishop Anton Schlembach described it as "a century event for the cathedral city and the whole diocese." After the trip, the Pope thanked Schlembach for his hospitality in a telegram.

Forty Years Without a Pope Visit

Since then, Rhineland-Palatinate has been waiting for the next Pope visit. Anyone under the age of 38 today has never witnessed a Pope in the state. However, various Popes have visited Germany: Pope Benedict XVI celebrated a mass in Cologne in 2005, and visited Regensburg and Thuringia in 2006.

A Rhineland-Palatinate Connection: Pope Francis in Boppard

Before he became Pope, Jorge Mario Bergoglio — better known as Pope Francis — studied German at the Goethe Institute in Boppard in 1985. He lived with a family named Schmidt for several months and worked on a doctoral thesis about the theologian Romano Guardini, a project he never completed. He also echoed feelings of feeling out of place during his stay in Boppard, often spending time walking through cemeteries.

Staying Connected: The Pope Visit in Neighboring Luxembourg

More recently, Pope Francis has had limited interactions with Rhineland-Palatinate. In September 2024, the Pope will visit neighboring Luxembourg, and believers from Germany are also expected to make the journey. The Pope will, as usual, travel through the city center in the Popemobile.

A Wish Fulfilled: Minister President Alexander Schweitzer's Private Audience with Pope Francis

When the Pope doesn't come to Rhineland-Palatinate, the state's leadership takes the journey to the Vatican. In early 2021, Minister President Alexander Schweitzer traveled to Rome for a private audience with Pope Francis. Schweitzer, a lifelong Catholic, described the meeting as "a day that is very special for me personally." While he would not reveal the anecdotes shared by Pope Francis, he did describe the encounter as "very entertaining."

A Glimpse into the Past and Future of Papal Visits

While Rhineland-Palatinate's history does not offer a long list of direct papal visits, its significance in German history and Catholicism cannot be understated. As the state waits for its next encounter with a Pope, past visits serve as a rich reminder of the region's Catholic heritage.

  • The Commission has also been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation in the context of popes visiting historic cathedrals like those in Mainz and Speyer.
  • The Pope's visit to Boppard in 1985, before he became Pope Francis, is an interesting anecdote that highlights Rhineland-Palatinate's connection to popes and the Catholic Church, much like the story of Martin Luther, who traveled along the Rhine, is a significant part of German and pop-culture history.
  • As Rhineland-Palatinate eagerly awaits a future papal visit, social-media platforms are filled with discussions and shared memories of previous visits, fueling a sense of anticipation and collective pride among Catholics in the state.
  • With entertainment and values heavily influenced by celebrities and pop-culture, the upcoming visit of Pope Francis to neighboring Luxembourg in 2024 could potentially inspire similar waves of excitement and reflection among the people of Rhineland-Palatinate, much like the impact of John Paul II's visits in 1980 and 1987.
  • In the meantime, Minister President Alexander Schweitzer's private audience with Pope Francis serves as a valuable reminder of the rich history and enduring bond between the Catholic Church and Rhineland-Palatinate, as well as the potential for continued dialogue and cooperation between the state and the Vatican.
