Popes Previously Known as Leo

Ready to meet the new Pope Leo XIV? This American cardinal donned the mantle in a jaw-dropping Vatican conclave. But he's not the first Pontifex to go by this historical name. Before him, a whole lineage of popes named Leo unfolded, each one leaving an indelible mark on the Church and history.

Leo I, hailing from Tuscany, founded the notion of the Pope as the Apostle Peter's representative. In 452, this fearless leader managed to negotiate Attila the Hun and preserve Rome from the barbarian rings. His unparalleled influence earned him the title "the Great" posthumously.

Next in line, Leo III sought sanctuary with Charlemagne, finding refuge in Paderborn in 799 to escape domestic turmoil. In 800, a legendary event took place, as Charlemagne accepted a crown during Leo's coronation.

Leo V's pontificate ended in brutal violence. He was imprisoned on orders from antipope Christopher, ultimately meeting his demise. Leo VIII, on the other hand, got appointed as pope under Emperor Otto I. Unfortunately, John's return from exile forced him to flee to the emperor once more.

Hailing from present-day Eguisheim in Alsace, Leo IX gave the College of Cardinals a more prominent role in governance and restructured the papal administration.

The last Leo to hold the position was Leo XIII, who became known as a mediation expert. He settled disputes with Switzerland and Latin American states during his tenure.

Just like his contemporary Pope Francis, Leo XIV belongs to the Augustinians, a medieval order founded by Pope Alexander. Critics and scholars argue whether Leo XIV could become another "Pope of Peace," ensuing in the peacekeeping legacy of his illustrious predecessor, Leo XIII.

With a rich ecclesiastical history associated with the name Leo, will the latest incumbent leave an equally indelible mark on the Church and the world? Time will tell!
