Leo XIV, the controversial new head of the Catholic Church, hails from the US, but his 20-year stint in Peru, mostly in slums and remote regions, has branded him a bridge-builder between the Global North and Global South. His citizenship in Peru, much like his predecessor Francis from Argentina, makes him the second South American pontiff. But his journey isn't without a trail of accusations.

Backdrop: The American Priest in Peru

As a missionary, priest, teacher, and bishop, Leo XIV immersed himself in Peru's diverse landscapes and communities, earning him the moniker of a unifier. Yolanda Díaz, a teacher and church member in Chiclayo, expressed Leo's approach: "He wanted the church to go to the people." Catholics account for three-quarters of Peru's population.

The Controversy:

Three women have accused Leo XIV of covering up abuse cases in his Peruvian diocese during his tenure as bishop between 2015 and 2023. Sarah Pearson, spokesperson for the SNAP abuse survivor network, raised deep concerns about Prevost's handling of abuse cases. The women accused Prevost of not initiating formal investigations, sending information to Rome, or disciplining the culpable priests. However, Prevost denied the allegations, and the diocese rejected them.

Controversial Past:

Prior to his time in Peru, as leader of the Augustinian Province in Chicago, Leo XIV faced accusations of allowing Father James Ray, a priest with prior abuse allegations, to reside near a Catholic school without informing authorities. Another case involved Father Richard McGrath, accused of raping a student, with ongoing allegations during Prevost’s leadership, though McGrath’s alleged offenses occurred earlier.

Investigations and Responses:

The Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith conducted an internal investigation in response to the circulating accusations, particularly those related to Peru. According to official Vatican sources, the investigation concluded that Pope Leo XIV’s conduct was impeccable and denied any wrongdoing or cover-up. However, survivor groups like SNAP remain dissatisfied with the responses and lack of formal church action during his leadership roles.

Despite the controversy, Leo XIV's impact in connecting the continents is undeniable. The dual U.S.-Peruvian citizen carries the responsibility of representing five continents as Leo XIV. His understanding of the importance of the church's role in poverty-stricken areas, gained from his own experiences, sets him apart from other popes.

  1. The Vatican, despite the baseless allegations against Pope Leo XIV, concluded that his conduct was impeccable during the internal investigation regarding his time in Peru.
  2. As Leo XIV takes up his role as the second South American pontiff, his controversial past, marked by accusations of covering up abuse cases in his Peruvian diocese, remains a subject of general-news and politics discussion.
  3. In spite of the controversies surrounding his leadership, the general public recognizes Leo XIV's commitment to bridging the divide between the Global North and Global South, as demonstrated by his prolonged immersion in slums and remote regions of Peru.
  4. Initiating formal investigations and sending information to Rome were among the actions accusers say Pope Leo XIV failed to take, when allegations of abuse surfaced during his tenure as bishop in Peru, a claim he has steadfastly denied.
