After a swift decision by the cardinals, the 69-year-old Robert Francis Prevost, hailing from the U.S., takes the throne as Pope Leo XIV. Hailing from an Augustinian monk background, with a segment of his life spent in Peru, Prevost left quite an impression on the 133 eligible cardinals.
A surprising turn of events, this new Pope seemed to be the consensus choice the Catholic Church needed in these challenging times. His inaugural words offer a glimpse into what his pontificate may hold.
A Touching First Speech
Donning more elaborate vestments than his predecessor, Leo XIV steps onto the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica at 19:23, following a mere 70 minutes of white smoke rising from the Sistine Chapel. In the fourth round of voting, Prevost swayed the majority of the College of Cardinals with his open-minded and worldly demeanor.
A Man of Bridges and Dialogue
In his first address to the people, a tearful Leo XIV addressed the faithful, urging them to be his aides in building bridges and fostering dialogue, aiming to create a united and peaceful global community. In this way, he made it clear that his goal resonates with the synodal and bridge-building approach of Pope Francis.
An Homage to Francis
Leo XIV, a devoted follower of his predecessor, paid tribute to Pope Francis during his speech. He referenced the last public appearance of the former Pope, where he imparted blessings in a weak but unwavering voice. Prevost's intention was to build upon this legacy.
A Global Approach
God's love is universal, and Leo XIV emphasized this in his message. His address was delivered in multiple languages, reflecting his dedication to inclusivity and global outreach. The Urbi et Orbi blessing was imparted in Latin, extending blessings to the city of Rome and the world.
A Man with a Mission
Upon closer scrutiny, Leo XIV's election could be seen as a deliberate choice by the College of Cardinals to guide the Catholic Church through his extensive experience and global approach. As demonstrated in his first speech, Pope Leo XIV is set on fostering unity, peace, and dialogue across the globe.
