Pope Leo XIV offers prayers for Charlie Kirk and his family
Pope Francis Calls for Dialogue and Condemns Polarization During Audience with U.S. Ambassador
Pope Francis held an audience with Brian Burch, the United States Ambassador, on a Saturday, during which he presented his prayers for Charlie Kirk, a prominent right-wing conservative activist.
The occasion for the audience was the presentation of Burch's credentials. During the meeting, the Pontiff expressed his concern about political violence and its impact on dialogue. He emphasized the importance of abstaining from polarizing rhetoric and actions.
Matteo Bruni, the Director of the Holy See Press Office, confirmed that the Pope spoke about these matters. Bruni also relayed that Pope Francis believes such actions do not foster dialogue.
Charlie Kirk was known for co-founding 'Turning Point USA' in 2012, which became a youth branch of former President Donald Trump's MAGA movement. He was influential especially among young male voters and actively engaged in political debates, spreading conservative arguments and conspiracy theories, and supporting the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot by organizing buses for participants. Tragically, Kirk was killed on September 10.
In addition to expressing prayers for Kirk's children and wife, Pope Francis emphasized the need to abstain from rhetoric and instrumentalizations that lead to polarization. He reiterated these sentiments in response to some journalists who had brought up the topic of political violence and its impact on dialogue.
Brian Burch, in turn, confirmed that the Pope spoke about the need for abstaining from polarizing rhetoric and actions. The conversation between the two men underscored the importance of dialogue and unity in these divisive times.
