In a significant move, the Vatican has installed its first Chinese bishop under Pope Leo XIV. Giuseppe Lin Yuntuan, the newly appointed auxiliary bishop of Fuzhou, was officially recognized by the Chinese government following his appointment on June 5, 2025.

The appointment is part of the ongoing dialogue between the Holy See and the People's Republic of China. The Vatican views this gesture as a further step towards constructive dialogue with China, acknowledging the significance of the Chinese government's recognition.

With approximately 12 million Catholics in China, the Vatican and Beijing maintain no formal diplomatic relations, chiefly due to the Vatican's recognition of Taiwan as a state. Despite this, the Vatican and China have been engaged in a historical agreement since 2018, allowing for joint appointments of bishops. This arrangement sets China apart from other countries where bishop appointments are solely the Holy See's prerogative.

Pope Leo XIV's first Chinese bishop appointment has been met with both optimism and criticism. While Chinese officials view it as a positive development, some Catholic factions criticize the agreement for granting too much control to the Chinese state over religious affairs.

The latest appointment comes at a time of cautious optimism from Beijing, amidst broader geopolitical tensions, such as the China-US relationship. Each new bishop appointment in China is closely monitored as a measure of Vatican-China relations, symbolizing either warming or cooling between the two sides.

As Pope Leo XIV technically retains the power to review or abrogate the deal, the future of Vatican-China dialogues on bishop appointments remains uncertain. However, the current status of these dialogues under Pope Leo XIV exemplifies cautious cooperation, marked by the first joint appointment and recognition since his election.
