Pope Leo expresses optimism for Ukraine, emphasizing the importance of both effort and faith in its future
Pope Leo's Week in Castel Gandolfo
Pope Leo spent a week in Castel Gandolfo from August 13, returning for a second period of rest after an initial stay in July. The week was filled with religious activities, visits, and interactions with the local community.
On the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, August 15, Pope Leo celebrated Mass at the pontifical parish of St Thomas of Villanova. The celebration marked the end of his week-long stay in the picturesque town.
Before the Mass, Pope Leo made a visit to the sanctuary of Our Lady, Mother of Grace of Mentorella, in Guadagnolo. He spent time with the Resurrectionist religious who are entrusted with the pastoral care of the shrine and joined them for lunch.
During his stay, Pope Leo had four appointments with the faithful. One of these appointments was at the Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Rotonda in Albano, where he presided over Mass for the poor, homeless, and residents of shelters and group homes.
Pope Leo also had an eagerly awaited lunch in Borgo Laudato Si' with a hundred poor, homeless, and needy people assisted by Caritas of Albano. This act of kindness demonstrated the Pope's commitment to serving those in need.
In addition to these activities, Pope Leo lit a candle at the foot of the statue of the Virgin Mary and expressed a special plea for peace in the world. He urged the attendees to bring love, humility, care, and meekness into the world, not weapons or destructive words.
During the Angelus, Pope Leo urged people not to resign themselves to "the prevalence of the logic of conflict and of arms". His remarks regarding negotiations for an end to the war in Ukraine were made on an unspecified Tuesday evening.
At the end of the Angelus, Pope Leo invited the faithful to pray for efforts to bring wars to an end and promote peace. He also emphasized during his homily that Mary's "yes" "still lives and resists death in the martyrs of our time, in witnesses of faith and justice, of gentleness and peace."
While in Castel Gandolfo, Pope Leo allegedly contacted or conversed with high-ranking church representatives, such as Cardinal Matteo Maria Zuppi, who was appointed his envoy for Ukraine and later traveled to Kyiv and Moscow for peace negotiations. However, there is no direct mention of the Pope personally contacting specific political leaders in that context.
After Mass, Pope Leo returned to Castel Gandolfo for the weekly Angelus. He expressed his hope to return to Castel Gandolfo again in the future, finding solace and inspiration in the peaceful surroundings of the town.
The Pope's week in Castel Gandolfo was a testament to his commitment to serving the community, promoting peace, and upholding the values of faith and justice. His actions and words continue to inspire and guide those who follow him.
