Pope Initiates Call to Gaza Parish Amidst Israel's Fresh Aggression against the City
In the heart of Gaza City, the Holy Family Parish, led by Father Gabriel Romanelli, a member of the Institute of the Incarnate Word, has become a beacon of hope and resilience for the displaced and vulnerable.
Father Romanelli, the pastor of this Latin Catholic church, has been providing food, water, and medicine to people in the neighbourhood, as well as organising activities for children to bring some semblance of normalcy in these challenging times. About 450 people are currently seeking shelter within the parish compound.
The parish oratory is operating, leading people in prayer, and offering comfort in these trying times. Amid the sound of artillery fire from the parish, Father Romanelli has been a source of strength, leading his congregation and those seeking refuge with compassion and grace.
The Israeli military has been urging civilians to evacuate Gaza City, but as of now, Israeli troops and tanks have not reached the area where the church compound is located.
Pope Leo XIV made a call to Father Romanelli on September 16 from Castel Gandolfo, expressing his support and solidarity during these difficult times.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz, in a statement posted on the same day at 6 a.m., stated that Gaza is burning and the Israeli Defense Forces are striking terrorist infrastructure.
Despite the ongoing conflict, Father Romanelli remains steadfast, posting a quote from St. John Bosco on a recent day, stating, "Trusting in Mary brings unshakable comfort and hope." The parish continues to offer special assistance to the sick and elderly, demonstrating its commitment to caring for all members of the community.
As the situation in Gaza City continues to unfold, the Holy Family Parish stands as a testament to the power of compassion, resilience, and faith in the face of adversity.
