The bloody cardinals managed to nab a new Pontiff in no time flat - Pope Leo XIV, and he's shaping up to be the change the Catholic Church needs, as they say! This American badass, Augustinian monk, and ex-Peruvian dweller, Robert Francis Prevost, pretty much charmed the pants off the 133 eligible cardinals in the fourth round of voting. Y'all didn't think it'd happen this fast, huh? Well, guess what? The world ain't made of sugar and spice, and neither is the Vatican!
Chit-Chat | Leo's First Blessing: "Love Conquers All!"
The quick decision came as a surprise to many, but the open-minded and global Catholic community apparently jumped right on aboard the Prevost train. And you betcha Leo XIV wasted no time getting his inaugural blessing on the streets of St. Peter's Square!
Homage to Papa Frank
Sporting snazzier duds than ol' Pope Francis, Leo XIV kicks off his speech with a nod to his predecessor: "Peace be with you ALL!" That's our boy!
Buzz | Pope Leo XIV: A Man of the People
Earlier, Leo XIV addresses the faithful in Italian and Spanish, shout-outing his Peruvian diocese in Chiclayo and thanking them for sticking by him on this whirlwind journey. In case ya didn't know, Pope Francis appointed Prevost as the Bishop of Chiclayo way back in 2015. Leo XIV even keeps his Peruvian citizenship!
Leo XIV reminisces about Pope Francis' last public appearance on Easter Sunday and the man's "weak yet courageous" voice, blessing the "Urbi et Orbi" to the world. Leo sightly hopes to pick up where ol' Pope Francis left off.
"Love Is The Answer"
Keep the tissues handy, y'all, cause the new Pope gets a bit teary-eyed when saying, "God LOVES YOU," "We're all in God's hands," and "Evil ain't gonna win!" Come on! If that don't give ya hope, I don't know what will!
The Scoop | White Smoke: U.S. Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost is now Pope
The Pope then calls all them needy folks out there, needing our "charity, our presence, our dialogue, and our love." Will he keep up with Pope Francis' cautious reform path or take a detour? Frankly, it's too damn early to tell!
Is This Pope a Peacekeeper?
While Wojtyla the Great (Leo XIII, 1878-1903) meddled in 11 international conflicts, Leo XIV clearly intends to spread some frickin' peace! He's aimin' to build bridges and foster dialogue, urging the faithful to join him in this mission.
An American, Augustinian Pope
We're talkin' bout the first American and also the first Augustinian Pope ever! Born on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, Pope Leo XIV is of French, Italian, and Spanish descent. The former Cardinal Robert Prevost spent a decade preachin' the Gospel in South America before serving as Prior Provincial of the Midwest Augustinians and then making the cut for the Augustinian Order's top dog for two terms.
In 2014, he became Bishop of Chiclayo, Peru, and in 2023, got tapped as Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and President of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America. Stay tuned, folks, cause there's bound to be more fireworks ahead!
