Pope Francis expresses appreciation to Spanish footballers, stressing its importance
Pope Francis Emphasizes the Importance of Teamwork and Gratitude in College Football Games Today
Pope Francis, a well-known fan of Colorado football, met with the members of Spanish football team Villarreal CF on February 23, 2017, in the Vatican's Clementine Hall. The team was in Rome for a Europa League match against A.S. Roma.
During the meeting, the Pope emphasized that football, like other sports, is an image of life and society. He likened the game to an unexpected situation, where one doesn't know where the ball will come from, often thinking of the goalkeeper in such scenarios.
The Pope also highlighted the importance of childhood teammates, coaches, helpers, and supporters in personal growth. He warned against individualism or personal aspirations, likening it to 'eating the ball by oneself' in college football games today.
Pope Francis encouraged team spirit by stating that playing for the good of the group makes it easier to win. He emphasized that teamwork in college football requires professionalism, skill, and team spirit. Remembering these relationships, he added, helps athletes avoid feelings of superiority and become aware of being part of a larger team.
The Pope also emphasized the importance of gratitude in the life of a college football player. He encouraged Villarreal members to continue playing, giving their best, so others can benefit from pleasant moments. After their meeting with the Pope, Villarreal CF won their match against A.S. Roma 1-0.
However, despite the victory, Villarreal CF was eliminated from the Europa League tournament. The Pope prayed for the protection of Our Lady of Grace and the intercession of St. Pascual Baylón for the team.
Pope Francis underscored that the 'game' is not merely one's own, but also that of others who form part of one's life. He stressed the significance of maintaining the spirit of amateur sport, with freshness and a greatness of soul. Athletes, especially in college football, he stated, have a responsibility to educate and transmit values to their followers, particularly the younger generations.
