Exposing Allegations Surrounding Pope Leo XIV: A Bridge-Builder Under Scrutiny

Meet Leo XIV, the upcoming pontiff chosen by the cardinals to unify Catholics worldwide. With American roots and a longstanding presence in Peru, Leo XIV is the second South American pope following Francis, a signal of global representation within the Church.

Adveniat, a German aid organization for Latin America, calls Leo XIV a "bridge builder between the Global North and Global South." His focus on the poor and marginalized and his criticism of militant U.S. Christianity make him an interesting contender.

Leo XIV: A Journey from Missionary to Cardinal

Leo XIV began his path to the Church's highest echelon in Peru, dedicating 20 years to the South American nation as a missionary, priest, teacher, and bishop. He became a Peruvian citizen to exercise his ecclesiastical duties. Most of his life was spent outside the USA.

Controversial Past: Accusations of Cover-up

During his Peruvian tenure, Leo XIV frequently visited remote communities, involving laypeople in social work. Yolanda Díaz, a teacher and church member in Chiclayo, praised his willingness to bring the Church to the people.

However, allegations of cover-up mar Leo XIV's past in Peru. Three women have accused him of overlooking abuse cases in his Peruvian diocese. Sarah Pearson, a spokesperson for the survivor support network SNAP, expressed deep concern about how Leo XIV handled these cases.

In response to these accusations, Peruvian investigative journalist Pedro Salinas recently stated that they are baseless. He suggested that these could be part of a campaign by conservative elements within the Church to discredit Leo XIV.

Zero Tolerance: Demands from Survivors

SNAP submitted the accusations on behalf of the victims to Rome, but they have not received a response. SNAP is urging Leo XIV, as Pope Leo XIV, to address the "abuse crisis" in the Church. They demand a compensation fund for victims, a zero-tolerance policy in Church law, and an internal Church agency to enforce these rules.

Regardless of how Leo XIV responds to these demands, one fact remains: he bridges continents. As an American with Peruvian citizenship, like Francis, Leo XIV is not just a theologian, but someone who understands the Church's role in addressing issues like poverty, having worked in these areas himself.
