Pope Leo XIV, previously known as Cardinal Robert Prevost, finds himself at the center of a storm due to accusations concerning the management of child sexual abuse cases, both in Peru and the United States. Born in the USA but a Peruvian citizen, Leo XIV, like his predecessor Francis, hails from South America, making him the second pontiff from the region.

Starting his ecclesiastical journey in Peru, Prevost spent 20 years working in the country as a missionary, priest, teacher, and bishop. His commitment to the local community earned him the nickname "Bridge-builder between the Global North and Global South" by the German Latin America aid organization, Adveniat. With an emphasis on embracing the marginalized, Prevost represents a stark contrast to former US president Donald Trump, according to Adveniat's main business manager, Father Martin Maier.

The Controversy

Renowned for his frequent visits to remote communities during his tenure as bishop, Prevost incorporated laypeople in social work, according to Yolanda Díaz, a teacher and member of the church in Chiclayo. However, controversy has tarnished the new pope's reputation, with allegations of failing to adequately address and investigate abuse cases in his Peruvian diocese.

Three women accused Prevost of negligence in handling abuse cases, as they reported their experiences to the diocese but claimed he neither initiated an investigation nor sent the information to Rome. In addition, they asserted that he did not discipline the responsible priests. Pope Leo XIV denied the accusations, but the diocese rejected them, too. In March 20XX, SNAP—an organization supporting survivors of sexual abuse by priests—submitted the accusations on behalf of the victims to Rome. Unfortunately, they have yet to receive a response.

As ultraconservative elements within the Catholic Church aggressively criticize Pope Leo XIV for his progressive stances, Peruvian investigative journalist Pedro Salinas dismissed the allegations against him, deeming them baseless and part of a campaign to discredit his potential papacy. Salinas is well-known for his work investigating sexual abuse cases within ultra-conservative religious groups. In January 20XX, Pope Francis disbanded the group known as Sodalicio due to its misdeeds, marking the largest publicized abuse scandal in Peruvian church history.

The Pope Battles Accusations and Strives for Change

Despite the controversy surrounding him, Pope Leo XIV continues to forge connections across continents. As a dual citizen of the United States and Peru, he represents unity, mirroring the legacy of his predecessor Francis and acknowledging the significance of the Church's role in addressing poverty.

While the future remains uncertain, Pope Leo XIV has been urged by SNAP to confront the sexual abuse crisis within the Church. SNAP demands a compensation fund for victims, a zero-tolerance policy regarding abuse, and an internal Church office to monitor and enforce these regulations. As a global figure, Pope Leo XIV has the power to bring about change, and only time will tell whether he will rise to the challenge.
