In the heart of Gaza City, the Holy Family Parish stands as a beacon of hope for its community. Led by Pastor Gabriel Romanelli, the only Latin Catholic parish in the city, the parish has been actively providing assistance to around 450 people taking refuge within its compound during the escalating conflict.

Pastor Romanelli, a member of the Institute of the Incarnate Word, has been distributing meals, water, and medicine to those in need. He has also kept the parish pharmacy open for special assistance to the sick and elderly. Despite being injured in July 2025 when the parish was hit by a shell during Israeli attacks, he continues his efforts for peace and reconciliation.

Pope Leo XIV recently spoke with Father Romanelli, expressing his concern, prayers, and closeness. The Pope's sentiments were echoed by Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz, who wrote on September 16 at 6 a.m., stating that "Gaza is burning" and that the Israeli Defense Forces are striking terrorist infrastructure and fighting bravely to release hostages and defeat Hamas.

Despite the ongoing conflict, the church compound where Father Romanelli's parish is located has not been reached by Israeli troops and tanks. The parish oratory is operating, leading people in prayer, and activities for children are being organized within the parish.

In a message of hope, Father Romanelli recently posted a quote from St. John Bosco, stating that "Trusting in Mary brings unshakable comfort and hope." The parish continues to assist the sheltered individuals and other people in the neighborhood with food, water, and medicine, providing a sanctuary amidst the chaos.

As the conflict continues, the Holy Family Parish remains a testament to the power of faith and community in difficult times.
