Pope Francis Chastises Abortions as a "Massacre" in Christmas Address

Vatican City's spiritual leader, Pope Francis, used forceful language to exponentially denounce the practice of abortions during his annual Christmas address in St. Peter's Square this year.

With an estimated 100,000 attendees in the religious capital of Rome, Francis passionately compared the destruction of unborn lives through abortions to the catastrophic consequences faced by children in war zones and on refugee journeys. He passionately declared, "Imagine the countless massacres of innocents that occur world-wide; in the womb, during refugee crises, and in decimated childhoods marred by conflict."

Although 87 years old, this notable figure has served as the head of the Catholic Church for more than a decade and has gained notoriety for his strident opposition to abortions. In fact, he is well-known for labeling abortions as acts of child murder.

Francis also implored world leaders to institute an immediate ceasefire in the ongoing Gaza conflict and to broach the conversation for a lasting peace agreement at negotiating tables. He stated, "I unreservedly condemn the relentless bombardment of war, resulting in an endless cycle of human misery, with innocent civilians as the prime casualties."

He reiterated his call for peace in other afflicted regions, citing conflicts in Ukraine, Syria, and the Sahel, while simultaneously protesting the proliferation of the arms industry.

Post-address, the pontiff bestowed the Urbi et Orbi blessing, a traditional blessing that extends to the city of Rome and all of humanity, from the balcony of St. Peter's Square.
